The show is set in the 13th century and centers around the life of Ertuğrul, the father of Osman I, who was the founder of the Ottoman Empire. It was filmed in Riva, a village in the Beykoz district of Istanbul, Turkey, and premiered on TRT 1 in Turkey on 10 December 2014. (November 2020) After saving Şehzade Numan, Şehzade Yigit and Halime Sultan, Ertuğrul puts the Kayı in a series of problems with the Templars and a powerful Seljuk man, Karatoygar. A problem also arises with Kurdoğlu, who seeks the Kayı Beylik which belongs to Ertuğrul's father, Süleyman Shah. They attempt to migrate to Aleppo however are stopped by Nasir, a traitor working for the Templars who pretends to be the Emir of Aleppo's faithful right-hand man. Ertuğrul kills him and successfully convinces the Emir of Aleppo to see the truth. Finally settled in Aleppo, Süleyman Shah orders the Kayı to siege the Templar castle. They succeed and the Kayı celebrate and Turgut Alp marries Aykiz, his childhood sweetheart and only love. Soon after, Ertuğrul also marries Halime. The Kayı migrate to the Seljuk-Mongol borders in Anatolia near Erzurum, following the will of Suleyman Shah before he died. Season 2 In the second season, Ertuğrul is captured by the Mongols, led by Baycu Noyan, but later escapes. Meanwhile, the Kayı tribe led by Hayme Ana, seeks refuge with the Dodurga tribe, led by Korkut Bey, her brother, as they were attacked by the Mongols resulting in many casualties with more than half the tribe dead. Halime Hatun is also pregnant. Aytolun, Korkut's wife, plots behind his back to help her brother Gümüstekin become the margrave with the help of Emir Sadettin Kopek while Ertuğrul is sent on exile by Hayme Ana. Tuğtekin confronts him but Ertuğrul tells Tuğtekin that his alp Kocabaş is a traitor and the Mongols would be arriving. As soon as Ertuğrul leaves, Kocabaş changes sides with Noyan and his soldiers injure Tugtekin badly and presume him to be dead. Kocabaş goes to the nomad tent and tells everyone that Ertuğrul killed Tuğtekin. Ertuğrul beheads him as a punishment. On the execution day of Ertuğrul, his alps save him and Tuğtekin appears which makes the situation better, however the tension is re-escalated with the arrival of Sungurtekin, Ertuğrul's long lost brother. Aytolun steals the Oğuz seal from him while poisoning Korkut and herself and putting the blame on Banu Çiçek, Korkut's adoptive daughter. However, Selcan and Ertugrul show Gundogdu and Hayme Ana her reality and stops Gundogdu from marrying Goncagul, daughter of Gümüstekin, who is later killed by Selcan's sister, Gökçe. After a fierce fight, Aytolun takes advantage of Halime's pregnancy and knee's her on her womb. Halime faints and Aytolun attempts to behead her but is killed by an arrow shot by Abdurrahman Alp. Noyan later martyrs Tuğtekin. Ertuğrul's first son, Gündüz is born. Ertuğrul mortally wounds Noyan who attempts to kill Gündüz. After defeating Gümüstekin and Noyan, the tribe is split between joining Ertuğrul on the Western border of Anatolia, or staying with Gundogdu and Sungurtekin.
